DR/VFI analyzes the Volume Table of Contents (VTOC), system catalogs, production JCL Libraries, and System Management Facility (SMF) data. From this information, DR/VFI can identify the tape and disk files required to execute the critical applications. DR/VFI also uses this information to produce the control data and JCL needed to backup and recover critical application files.

DR/VFI interfaces with scheduling, disk management, and tape management systems. Through these interfaces, DR/VFI automates much of the process of backup, synchronization, backup verification, and recovery of critical application files.
